Tribute from The Department for the Study of Religions, University of Ghana, Legon

Created by Elizabeth 3 years ago

Very Rev Joshua Narteh Kudadjie was appointed a lecturer to the Department for the Study of Religions in October 1972 and rose to the position of Associate Professor in 2000.

For 26 years, Very Rev Prof Kudadjie actively served the Department and the entire University teaching, supervising graduate works, researching, soliciting for funds and helping in the general administration of the University. As a committed teacher, Prof Kudadjie’s elective courses were oversubscribed by students indicating his attraction as an astute lecturer.

His dedication and commitment to the Department was outstanding. He had acted as Head of Department on a number of occasions and was the substantive Head on two occasions (1984- 1987; 1990-1992). As Head of Department, Prof. Kudadjie spearheaded and encouraged the revision of the Department’s curriculum and programs. He also encouraged students to pursue graduate Studies both at Legon and Abroad and procured funds for some of these students for their studies which culminated in a very high number of current academic staff of the Department being his former students. He was a father, mentor and counsellor to his students. He took keen interest not only in the academic progression of students and staff but was concerned about the general well-being of all whom he came across.

Very Rev Prof Kudadjie was not only a teacher par excellence. He was also a true moralist. His principled position on issues and the manner of communicating such positions without hurting anyone was admirable. One of his favourite philosophies was that wisdom does not reside with an individual, but that everyone, no matter the background has something to contribute to arguments that shape final decisions. He held and defended the position that every student should be made to take a course in ETHICS as he was with the firm conviction that the only way to make humanity humane to enrich inter-personal relationships and interactions is through sound Ethical Education.

Indeed, Very Rev Prof Kudadjie has fully paid his dues to the Department for the Study of Religions, the University of Ghana, the West African sub-region and the entire globe through his intellectual exploits and humane demeanor.

May his very gentle soul rest in Perfect Peace!
